Olmert denies allegations of unlawfully receiving funds prior to premiership
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert calls impromptu press conference following court decision to revise gag order in police probe against him; categorically denies ever receiving unlawful funds, says if indicted will resign.
“Citizens of Israel, I look you in the eye and I say to you, in no uncertain terms, I have never taken a bribe, nor have I unlawfully pocketed money,” said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Thursday. “If Attorney General Menachem Mazuz decides to file an indictment against me I shall resign immediately, even though I am not required to do so by law.”
My comment: This guy sounds like our own crooked politicians. I think he studied the career of Richard Nixon or maybe it was Spiro Agnew, Nixon’s vice-president. Agnew resigned after being charged with extortion, tax fraud, bribery, and conspiracy; he was formally charged with having accepted bribes totaling more than $100,000.
