I had to read the article twice…first to contemplate that weirdos this low exist in our country. Then I read it again to make sure I understood it correctly.

Yes! It happened. Albert Snyder of York, Pa. sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified damages after church members demonstrated at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq.
