THE DREAM OF ETERNAL YOUTH
————————–————————–
By Harvey Tobkes
Many years ago, I remember seeing a popular movie, The Picture of Dorian Gray; the plot was based on a well-known book by Oscar Wilde. The story tells us of a young Adonis, who modeled for his portrait by a famous artist and then a strange phenomenon develops…the man’s features never change, and as the years roll by, he looks exactly as depicted in the magical painting. Of course, in real life we all age, some faster than others.
But at the very moment that the man meets a sudden, violent death, the painting suddenly changes to a hideous abomination to behold.
Some wish for that fantasy, but it cannot be, as eternal youth is merely a foolish dream of some, and even if the impossible came true, it can be a deadly curse, as portrayed in Wilde’s book.
