PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE – EUROPEANS vs AMERICANS –
Europeans generally believe that the economy exists to make people’s lives better. Americans generally believe that people exist to make the economy work better. American policies on work, health care, wages, unions, etc. all follow from that belief.
Europeans value leisure time, Americans value cash. ie Europeans chose to ‘buy’ free time by sacrificing pay (on average, across whole society).
The ‘pay per hour is remarkably similar (indeed, Europe somewhat higher). However, Europeans chose to work fewer hours, and get less total pay, while Americans choose to work longer.
