A LOOK-BACK ~ IT’S BEEN A HELLUVA YEAR FOR THE STOCK MARKET

By Harvey Tobkes

Nobody talks about good things when they happen. All we hear is gloom and doom, but I want to shine a light on some financial positives.

In 2020, if you had money invested in the stock market, you probably had some excellent gains and your portfolio is way ahead of where it was a year ago.

Also, if you own a home, can you believe the appreciation in value? Forget about comparing the present value to what you paid for it, because that is just too good to be true, but it is true. However, values really skyrocketed in the past 2 or 3 years and now most people are sitting on a bundle of untapped cash. Maybe the word untapped does not always apply, as many have refinanced and taken tax-free cash out. A bit of a downside to this, is young people are finding it difficult to buy affordable homes.

The rest of the good news is widely known; hopefully, the year 2021 will see some positive changes or somewhat of an improvement in the China situation, there may even be a cooling down of tensions in the Noth Korean, Iran and Russian situations. In this country, inflation is still in check, interest rates are low, jobs are plentiful, and salaries are high.

So, today, with a New Year approaching, let’s be optimistic. What makes life so interesting is we do not know the future, but we can live it as it enfolds daily. Let us hope that 2021 will be a good and peaceful year with no natural disasters or man made wars and hopefully we will see an ending of the pandemic and a return to our normal lives without the threat of death by COVID-19.
