WHEN I WAS A KID in JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
By Harvey Tobkes
It is a great loss that students are not taught trade skills these days. It’s important to learn to use the computer but there is also a lifelong benefit learning trade skills. I think girls got instruction mostly in classes related to what was called homemaking or home economics and typing.
I was fond of the class for boys in printing where I was good at typesetting. Of course, I got printers ink all over me, but it was fun. I also liked the class in electrics where I learned about wiring and such. For some reason I was terrible in the woodworking shop.
After all the years, I still have fond memories of those classes and I remember looking forward to the day my next school shop class was scheduled, after all it was a lot better than algebra.
